CALL
for the PARTICIPATION of ARTISTS (AND NOT) in the EUROPEAN FEMINIST FORUM
WHAT COULD A FEMINIST ART CURRENCY LOOK LIKE?
Introduction
A lot of women, feminist, queer, trans / gender* artists are experiencing
financial precariousness which force them (us) to keep art a second goal
in life. To what extent is our art publicly called professional or amateurish,
by others and by ourselves? A hobby or not, many artists, curators and
cultural producers engaged with feminist, queer and trans / gender environments
are experiencing the impossibility of being part of art systems, which
poorly allow visual, thematic and theoretical diversity. Also the recent
institutional demand for ‘gendered art’, and the production
of blockbuster exhibitions with feminist art of one generation, sometimes
presented as a style, does not contribute in differentiating forms of
art production.
Call for contributions
Discussing contemporary art within the framework of the European Feminist
Forum, the members of the Affinity Group ‘Switch Metaphors’
raise the question how we as feminist, queer, trans / gender artists (and
not) can improve our artistic agency in the public domain. Can we consider
our art, exhibitions and projects the exchange of feminist
interests with others, for example our interest to undermine “hetero-normative”
or “patriarchal” art structures through art? What
do we need so we are able to make and exhibit our art? How can we re-think
the funding and self-funding of our art? Is there a way to imagine art
economy differently? How can we position ourselves differently
as professional artists? What does your feminist art
currency look like?
We would like to
ask you to respond to our questions and send us a story with (an) example(s)
of your strategies, solutions, attempts, failures and successes of making
a living of your art or next to your art.
The contributions will be
collected online. The trans / gender platform (www.trans-genderplatform.nl)
will host the collection. In aid of proper financial agency for feminist
artists, this archive is the starting point for the analysis of the collected
strategies in an exchange with feminist economists and other Affinity
Groups within the EFF. Are we able to stress the importance of a strategy
of inclusion and diversity within art systems? To bring a new currency
into circulation? And switch metaphors from within the dominant
art market? Let’s try!
You can send in your contribution in the medium you prefer (text, essay,
film, poem, cartoon, documentation of a performance or painting, mp3 file).
It can be short or long, draft or conclusion. The vehicle language within
our AG is English. Contributions in other languages are very welcome,
possibly translated. Participation is on a voluntary basis. Please don’t
hesitate to ask further questions or make comment. More about the EFF
and the AGs: http://europeanfeministforum.org
We are looking forward to your response!
