Ik maak tekeningen en schilderingen van
de Hooglandse Kerk, het uitzicht vanuit mijn woning in Leiden. Reflectie
op kunst, werk, dagelijks leven en vriendschappen leidt tot het oppakken
van een potlood of penceel om de (denk)ruimte vast te leggen tussen
de kerk en mij, de kunstenaar.
Met de eerste serie van 93 tekeningen en schilderingen van de kerk behaalde
ik in 2004 cum laude mijn graad MA Fine Art aan het Piet Zwart Institute
in Rotterdam. Het werk werd basis voor tentoonstellingen (Tent., Kaus
Australis, Scheltemacomplex, MMKA e.a.) en lezingen (universiteiten
in Hamburg, Nijmegen en Leiden, VBKÖ Wien e.a.).
Het werk en de titel van het werk ‘A Room with a Lesbian View’
roept bij sommige mensen vragen op en bij andere mensen niet. Eigenlijk
heb ik nooit de reacties van mensen weten te voorspellen, zowel binnen
als buiten de kunstwereld niet. Een groep scholieren luisterde aandachtig
naar mijn uitleg van het werk en het deed hun hersenen kraken. De oma
van een vriendin, zelf amateur-schilder, vindt het mooi. Eenmaal vernam
ik van een schilder dat hij mijn tekeningen en schilderingen geen kunst
vond. Soms zijn vrouwenkunstenaars en -curators extra kritisch over
het feit dat ik een kerk dominant laat zijn in mijn werk. Sommige kunstenaars
en curators vinden mijn werk uniek en waardevol. Meestal worden dat
vriendschappen.
In de verschillende reacties staat één ding voorop: het
werk geeft aanleiding voor discussie, gesprek en nieuwe verhalen
over kunst(geschiedenis), kunstcriteria, de positie van de toeschouwer,
de rol van kunst in de maatschappij en kunsteconomie. Zonder dat zou
kunst, zowel goede als slechte, überhaupt niet bestaan.

I draw and paint the Hooglandse Kerk, a
gothic church, which is my view from my apartment in Leiden. Reflection
on art, work, daily life and friendships make me take a pencil or brush
and record the space between the church and me, the author.
In 2004 the first series of 93 drawings and paintings was part of my
graduation at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam from which I received
the degree MA Fine Art with honours. The work became the basis for exhibitions
(Tent., Kaus Australis, Scheltemacomplex, MMKA e.a.) and lectures (universities
in Hamburg, Nijmegen en Leiden, VBKÖ Wien e.a.).
Some people find the series and its title, A Room with a Lesbian View,
questionable; others not. I have never been able to predict people’s
reactions both inside and outside the art world. Once a group of school
pupils listened carefully to the story behind the work and found it
very interesting. De grandmother of a friend of mine, an amateur painter
herself, likes it a lot. One time I heard a painter saying he didn’t
think the drawings and paintings art. Sometimes women artists en curators
are especially critical towards the dominancy of the church in the body
of work. There are also artists and curators who consider my work unique
and valuable. Usually we become friends.
Looking beyond the different reactions towards the work, the most important
thing is that discussion is provoked. The work leads to conversations
and new stories about art (history), art criteria, the position
of the viewer, the role of art in society and art economy. Without these
discussions art, both good and bad, would not exist at all.
